About Us

Who we are...

The Vankleek Hill & District Historical Society is a registered Canadian charity (1999) affiliated with the Ontario Historical Society. Federal income tax receipts are provided for cash donations of $20 and over, as well as some types of in-kind donations as set out by Revenue Canada.

The Historical Society was created during the 1997 Vankleek Hill Bi-centennial. Our objective is to foster preservation of our community history. Our goal is to create a museum, archives & visitor centre in the McCuaig, Cheney General Store at 95 Main Street East .

This heritage building (c.1835) was purchased by the Historical Society, and title turned over to Champlain Township for public safekeeping. The $25,000 purchase costs were raised in the local community.

MCCUAIG, CHENEY GENERAL STORE

The McCuaig, Cheney General Store (c.1835) provides a strong footing – in its architecture and use as a general store – to further the objective of the historical society which is to foster the preservation of our community history. The creation of a museum, archives, and visitor centre in this general store building will provide the learning experience of vital links from our past to our present and on to the future.
